PONTIAC, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Oakland County government has expanded significantly since before the pandemic as it has increased its workforce by 20% while the county population has increased 1.7%.
Oakland County has increased its number of budgeted employees from 4,701 in 2019 to 5,661 in 2024, according to financial documents it submitted to the state this week. Total revenues have increased over that five-year span from $524.2 million to $825.2 million. That includes $34.3 million in federal COVID money the county received in 2024.
The county stated its population has gone from 1,275,118 in 2019 to 1,296,888 in 2024.
The county’s parks and recreation saw expansion from 2019 to 2024. The number of parks and recreation employees increased from 497 to 1,063 over that five-year time period. The county didn’t state how many were full-time workers or part-time seasonal employees. Parks and recreation operating expenses increased from $26.2 million in 2019 to $38.3 million in 2024.
The county stated it has increased the number of parks it has from 13 with 6,747 acres in 2019 to 17 with 7,143 acres in 2024.
