LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Republicans in Michigan’s House voted down a bill that would have given illegal immigrants the opportunity to get a driver’s license.

House Bill 4195 failed with 64 no votes and 39 yes votes on Thursday. The bill included this language: “For purpose of this act, the citizenship or immigration status of an individual must not be considered in determining whether the individual is a resident of this state.”

Michigan’s Speaker of the House offered this comment. “Sadly, 39 of 52 House Democrats vote to give illegal aliens driver’s licenses so they can vote. Luckily it did not pass. All Republicans voted against it,” State Rep. Matt Maddock (R-Milford) said on X.

There are 19 states and Washington, D.C. that allow illegal immigrants to obtain a drivers license. The states that allow it are California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, Virginia and Washington, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

In Pennsylvania, one GOP legislator is trying to permanently ban illegal immigrants from being issued driver licenses. GOP state Rep. Donna Scheuren introduced the bill that would achieve that by amending Pennsylvania’s constitution.

The Federation For American Immigration Reform, a national organization based in Washington, D.C., has opposed granting driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants. In 2020, Federation For American Immigration Reform called allowing illegal migrants to have driver’s licenses a “public safety threat which also may facilitate identity, bank, and voter fraud, as well as the employment of illegal aliens. It also allows those breaking the nation’s immigration laws to remain hidden in plain sight, promotes the normalization of illegal aliens, and undermines the rule of law.”
