LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan Democratic Attorney General Dana Nessel is tired of watching Democrats politely sip chamomile tea while, in her view, President Trump burns down the federal playbook. In a recent interview with Michigan Public Radio, Nessel all but called on her fellow Democrats to stop playing pattycake with President Donald J. Trump and start throwing out legal, and possibly other, punches to fight against him.

Nessel ramps up the legal barrage.

Since Trump returned to the White House in January, Nessel has been leading the charge in court, challenging executive orders that she says violate the law and endanger Michiganders. This includes filing six lawsuits against the federal government and filing amicus briefs in another twelve cases. Nearly every day, another press release email highlights her fight against the president, as we’ve previously reported, and she warned in the interview, “This will certainly not be the last of our lawsuits.”

Whether it’s about federal firings, Elon Musk’s power, or funding cuts, Nessel often files suit within 24 hours and tries to secure a restraining order faster than most people can find their reading glasses.

Nessel explains why she keeps suing the Trump administration.

What is Nessel’s criteria for choosing cases to file? Admittedly, she said, “whether I like it or not.” Included alongside that are other metrics that include whether she thinks Trump’s executive order is bad for the state, if it violates the law and if there is a specific concrete harm being done.

With 45% of the state budget funded by federal dollars, it’s easy to see why Nessel’s lawsuits are flying out the door. In the interview, she mentioned being “scared” for Michigan and other states about the direction of the country. She noted that she believes Republican AGs are afraid to file lawsuits because they are beholden to their “fealty” (loyalty) to the president. Speaking about her fellow attorneys general around the country, she said, “We’re trying our best to hold up under really challenging circumstances.”

Nessel to future lawyers in Michigan: we need your help to fight Trump’s assault on America.

In a partisan discussion at the Michigan State University Law School, when asked by a student if she should continue on her path to be a lawyer, Nessel told the student that attorneys are needed to fight Trump. Saying that he’s trying to destroy the country, ignoring the law and the Constitution, disparaging people, and effectively setting our flag ablaze on the global stage, Nessel didn’t hold back on her opinion of the president, arguing that it’s impossible to negotiate with someone like him.

Speaking about Democrats who are too pragmatic and who are trying to work with President Trump, Nessel said, “I think that those Democrats will look back on this very difficult and concerning time in American history and have deep regrets that they didn’t do more to fight back when they still had the opportunity to do so.”

Trump is the enemy and Nessel is the resistance.

Michigan Public Radio isn’t the only stop where Dana Nessel has been airing her grievances about politicians cozying up to Trump. The Michigan attorney general, who is rumored to be eyeing Senator Gary Peters’ seat, has been making the rounds, hammering the point home. In a recent interview with MLive, Nessel made it clear she has no interest in following Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s example of seeking common ground with the former president.

She said in the interview that when Trump is treated like a “normal” president, it forces others to do business with him and it sends the wrong message. Nessel didn’t hold back, labeling Trump as someone who wants to be a king. She also accused him of being “the least patriotic person I’ve ever seen” but someone who “wraps himself in the flag” while ignoring America’s global reputation and the welfare of its people. She capped off the interview by calling the president a “dictator” who is destroying Michigan and the rest of the country.
