ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Tre Donaldson’s three-pointer with 2:13 left in the game put Michigan back in front, 66-65, as they held onto a three-point victory, 68-65, over UC San Diego in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Vladislav Goldin made two free throws to seal the win with 20 seconds left, and then UC San Diego’s last-second three-point attempt was denied, keeping the Wolverine’s season alive.
“We have done this all year. We did a really nice job as a team when the game got ugly. We just kept playing. This is March Madness. We expect this the next game and the game after that,” said head coach Dusty May after the game on the court.

Goldin led with 14 points, adding seven rebounds, and Roddy Gayle, Jr., scored 11. The Donaldson gave 12 points, and Danny Wolf provided nine points and 11 rebounds.
Michigan led by as many as 10 points in the second half, 56-46, before UC San Diego made their move. Still up by 10, 59-49, with 7:57 to go, Michigan let UC San Diego back in the game over the next five minutes as the Tritons took the lad, 65-63, on a 16-4 run. A jumper at 2:29 put UC San Diego in front, but 16 seconds later, Donaldson put the Wolverines back in the lead for good, 66-65.
UC San Diego had two chances in the final two minutes to talk the lead but missed a jumper and a layup. Donaldson grabbed the defensive rebound with 45 seconds left, and 15 seconds later, Goldin pulled down the offensive rebound and was fouled. He followed, making both free throws, and Michigan held on for the win.
The Wolverines shot 42 percent from the floor but went 9-of-27 from the arc (33 percent).
Michigan takes on Texas A&M next on Saturday night in Denver.
