LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Some Michigan utility customers will see their bills increase in April.

The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) approved a $153.8 million rate increase for Consumers Energy which goes into effect on April 4. This decision will result in an average monthly bill increase of approximately $2.78 for residential customers.

Consumers Energy initially requested a $325 million rate hike but received approval for less than half that amount. The additional revenue is earmarked for enhancing the reliability of the electric grid, including extensive tree-trimming efforts and infrastructure upgrades. These measures aim to reduce the frequency and duration of power outages, especially during severe weather events.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel expressed concern over the frequency of rate increases, noting that Consumers Energy filed this request just 91 days after its previous rate hike was approved.
