PONTIAC, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – James Crumbley, the father of the Oxford High School shooter, has reportedly requested a new trial.
A jury convicted Crumbley of involuntary manslaughter in 2024 and he’s currently serving 10-15 years in prison. The jury found that Crumbley did not properly prevent his son from killing four students and injuring seven others in November 2021. In part, the jury relied on evidence that showed Crumbley ignored his son’s cries for mental health help and did not take him home on the day of the shooting, despite the administration asking Crumbley to leave with his son.

James Crumbley filed a motion for a new trial, claiming an agreement made with Oxford school officials was not given to his defense attorney. In addition, Crumbley is asking a judge to determine if his lawyer’s alleged ineffectiveness will trigger a new trial.
James Crumbley and his wife, Jennifer Crumbley, were the first parents convicted for a mass shooting carried out by their child. Jennifer Crumbley is also serving 10-15 years for involuntary manslaughter; she has requested a new trial as well.
