DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – The typical worker in the city of Detroit makes about 88% more than the city’s residents.
The average for a job in Detroit is about $85,000. The average annual pay for a city resident is about $45,000. The state of Michigan’s average wage rate is $70,000.

The city of Detroit has been tracking that statistic since 2010 and the gap has not changed much over the past 15 years. The City Council received the latest report this week.
The average wage rate has increased after stalling from 2020 to 2022 during the pandemic. From 2022 through 2024, the average wage rates were back climbing up.
That means more money for the city, which collects a city income tax. It imposes a 2.4% city income tax on residents and 1.2% on nonresidents. That income tax generated $290.5 million in 2022 and rose to $366.2 million in 2024. The city projects it will reach as high as $482.8 million in 2029.
