DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – The city of Detroit is creating a Climate and Disaster Recovery Task Force, saying that racially marginalized communities are more impacted by climate change.
The Detroit City Council will act on a resolution at its March 11 meeting that calls for the creation of the task force.

“Black and Brown populations have a higher risk of disaster vulnerability, exposing them to suffer from greater economic hardship, delayed recovery and reduced access to federal aid, exacerbating existing social and economic inequities,” the resolution states.
Detroit’s new task force would be chaired by City Council Member Latisha Johnson and could include members from other city departments or county, state or federal organizations or community organizations focused on “environmental justice.”
The U.S. Department of Justice under the Joe Biden administration promoted the idea of environmental justice, where minorities are more severely impacted by climate change, which it identified as a national security threat.
“Altered weather patterns due to climate change produce fires, floods, and, most recently, hard freezes in locations without the appropriate infrastructure for tolerating such events,” the U.S. Department of Justice stated. “Low-income and underserved communities, as well as communities of color, are disproportionately impacted by these events.”
