DETROIT, Mich. (Michigan News Source) — Last year, the Detroit Free Press Marathon brought in an estimated 26,000 people for a four-day event that included eight races.

It also brought in $221,755 to the city for the services provided by the police department that worked the event.

That was part of $3.05 million in fiscal year 2024 the city brought in that paid for police and fire services as well as any use of facilities or resources during special events ranging from sporting events like the Pistons and Red Wings to concerts. The city released the information in a report that tracks revenue it received for special events that needed City Council approved permits. Among the venues were Ford Field, Little Caesars Arena and the Masonic Temple.

The city took in $6,460 for policing one-day events like concerts or comedian shows in 2024. A Detroit Lions football game meant between $24,579 to $27,659 for police coverage.
