LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – In 2019, State Rep. Laurie Pohutsky (D-Livonia) introduced a bill that would create “community cat programs” that would allow “community cat caretakers” to capture feral cats and have them sterilized.
Five years later, Pohutsky told Michigan Advance that she was the one getting sterilized and she did it in protest over President Donald Trump.
Pohutsky’s sterilization claim goes viral.

Pohutsky has gone viral when Advance Michigan reported her claim. The news site reported Pohutsky said Wednesday that she underwent surgery earlier this year to become voluntarily sterile out of fear for the future of reproductive health care access with President Donald Trump back in office.
“Just under two weeks ago, I underwent surgery to ensure that I would never have to navigate a pregnancy in Donald Trump’s America,” Pohutsky said. “I refuse to let my body be treated as currency by an administration that only sees value in my ability to procreate.”
“If you know people who are questioning how serious this is, I’m going to repeat myself: A sitting government official opted for voluntary sterilization because she was uncertain she would be able to access contraception in the future.”
Pohutsky’s far left stances.
In 2019, Pohutsky introduced a bill that would create “community cat programs” for feral cats that lived outdoors but “congregate together.” The program authorized “community cat caretakers” to capture feral cats and have them sterilized.
On Jan. 28, 2024, Pohutsky said she was disgusted by “hateful legislation” that was introduced in Michigan that would prevent males from playing in female sports.
In June 2024, Pohutsky put out a press release in which she used “recent media reports” to accuse Michigan Republicans of being prone to violence against women.

In January 2023, Pohutsky blamed the state’s “crumbling infrastructure” on climate change. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer infamously campaigned on “fix the damn roads” in 2018. But Whitmer’s first two budgets spent less on transportation than predecessor Gov. Rick Snyder.
In June 2024, Pohutsky led the movement to declare that month Lesbian, Gay Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ+) Pride Month in Michigan.
