WASHINGTON, DC (Michigan News Source) – Another day means another vote where four Michigan Democrats – Reps Debbie Dingell, Haley Stevens, Shri Thanedar, and Rashida Tlaib – opt to side with illegal immigrants instead of American safety and security.
The House just passed a bill, HR 35, that would slap penalties on illegal aliens who flee from Border Patrol. But these four Michigan Dems? They gave it a big, fat “NAY.” The other two Michigan Democratic representatives, Kristen McDonald Rivet and Hillary Scholten, voted “yea” as did all of the Republicans.
This isn’t the first time that Dingell, Stevens, Thanedar, and Tlaib have chosen to vote for the protection of illegal immigrants over American security interests.
As we reported previously, they voted against the Laken Riley Act and also against deporting criminal illegal aliens who have committed sex crimes against American citizens.
New bill cracks down on fleeing illegal immigrants.
HR 35, also known as the Agent Raul Gonzalez Officer Safety Act, passed on Thursday, February 13th with a vote of 264 to 155 in the House. The bill, named after a Border Patrol agent who was killed during a high-speed chase, aims to deter migrants from fleeing agents by enforcing minimum prison sentences and mandating deportation.
Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson said about the legislation, “This bill delivers a strong message: those who cross our borders illegally and jeopardize the safety of our officers will face severe criminal and immigration penalties. Republicans will continue to take decisive action and echo President Trump’s leadership to deliver what is necessary to protect the American people and secure our borders.”
Bill cracks down on fleeing from border patrol.
According to the legislation, individuals who attempt to evade Border Patrol agents or assisting law enforcement by fleeing in a motor vehicle could face up to two years in prison. If a vehicle pursuit causes “serious bodily injury,” the minimum sentence would be five years in prison. If the chase results in death, the penalty would range from ten years to life in prison.
To become law, the bill will also have to pass in the Senate and get signed into law by President Trump. Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, who has championed this issue since Gonzalez’s passing, introduced a Senate companion bill on last week and said, “This bill is a critical step toward protecting our communities and ensuring criminals can no longer exploit past failures.”

Others aren’t happy about the legislation, including many Democrats who voted against it. Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Detroit) went on a rant on the floor on February 13th about the bill complaining that the bill did not allow for due process and was racist. She said, “Here we go again. We’re voting yet again on another bill that just promotes racial profiling. That’s exactly what’s happening. Because Americans right now that are brown or black or have an accent, that are American citizens, are carrying passports with them. Why? Because we’re gonna allow the targeting of communities that look like my district to police them, to militarize them.”
Once again, Michigan’s Sanctuary Squad – Dingell, Stevens, Thanedar, and Tlaib – have made their priorities clear, choosing to stand with illegal immigrants over American security. While other members of their party recognized the need for stronger enforcement, these four continue to double down on opposition, dismissing legitimate concerns about border safety.
