LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Elizabeth Clement is resigning from the court no later than April 30, 2025. This decision paves the way for Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer to appoint a successor. That appointment could expand the court’s Democratic-nominated majority to 6-1.

Following her departure from the Michigan Supreme Court, Chief Justice Clement will assume the presidency of the National Center for State Courts (NCSC). Clement expressed enthusiasm for this new role, aiming to enhance accessibility, transparency, and efficiency within judicial systems nationwide.

Clement’s tenure on the state’s highest court began with her appointment in 2017 by then-Governor Rick Snyder. She secured a full term in the 2018 election and was appointed Chief Justice in November 2022.

Whitmer’s court appointee will serve until the next general election in 2026.
