SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (Michigan News Source) – In a move that surely left cartographers reaching for the Advil, Illinois Democratic Governor J.B. Pritzker stood in front of the American and Illinois state flags on Friday, February 7th to deliver a proclamation of historic proportions – or at least a historic trolling of President Trump’s decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico to be the “Gulf of America.”
With all the pomp and circumstance of a royal decree, Pritzker announced that Lake Michigan would henceforth be known as “Lake Illinois,” because, in his words, “a great lake deserves to be named after a great state.”

Apparently, after centuries of being shared with Wisconsin, Indiana, and (minor detail) Michigan, Illinois has decided to slap its own name on the nation’s second-largest Great Lake.
Pritzker said in his announcement, “I’m issuing a proclamation declaring that here and after Lake Michigan shall be known as Lake Illinois. The proclamation has been forwarded to Google to ensure the world’s maps reflect this momentous change.”
He added, “In addition, the recent announcement that to protect the homeland, the United States will be purchasing Greenland. Illinois will now be annexing Green Bay to protect itself against enemies, foreign and domestic I’ve also instructed my team to work diligently to prepare for an important announcement next week regarding the Mississippi River.”
Axios Chicago said this satirical video was released instead of jumping into the fray with the other Democrats resisting Trump, firing off statements or attacking the president over recent policies. By releasing this video, Pritzker is separating himself from other Democrats by taking comedic jabs at the president. However, comic timing being everything, they pointed out that Trump’s “Gulf of America” declaration was weeks ago – which feels like years in this new Trump news cycle.
Trolling Trump, one waterway at a time.
Pritzker’s theatrics are a not-so-subtle jab at President Donald Trump in satirical fashion. However, many on X didn’t think that this was a good use of the governor’s time. USA Lover said on X, “I am glad you are hard at work for the people of Illinois. This was absolutely the best use of your time to lower the crime rates in Chicago.”

X user Lucy said, “To think an elected leader would spend time and money to put out this product. Meanwhile, people in his state are starving and can barely afford food unlike him.”
The Rooster had a simple challenge for Pritzker saying, “Please invade Ohio, sir. We beg you.”
