DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – In a strange turn of events, a homeless illegal immigrant in Detroit practically begged Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to lock him up. The 23-year-old Venezuelan national, who crossed into the country illegally, entered the agency’s lobby in Detroit on February 6th and told authorities that if he wasn’t detained, he would have no choice but to commit crimes to survive.
Desperation meets policy failure.
According to Up North Live, the unnamed illegal immigrant approached ICE officers and explicitly requested detention, citing his dire circumstances. Unlike the thousands of illegal immigrants currently being released into American cities with little oversight, this one was hoping to get locked up.

ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Detroit Field Office Director Robert Lynch said in a press release, “We’re grateful that this individual self-reported and turned himself over to ICE before going out and threatening public safety.”
The Biden-Harris administration’s border policies have resulted in an overwhelming influx of illegal immigrants into the country, straining resources in major cities like Detroit. These cities, already dealing with crime, homelessness, and economic struggles, now face the added burden of trying to house and support illegal immigrants who often see crime as their best bet for survival.
A broken system on display.
This case raises a glaring question: how bad have things become when an illegal immigrant sees ICE detention as a preferable alternative to life in an American city?
It’s an indictment of both immigration policies and urban governance. Sanctuary city policies have largely tied law enforcement’s hands in their efforts to keep Americans safe, and overwhelmed shelters have made it nearly impossible for cities to provide for their own homeless populations – let alone an influx of new arrivals. The result? An illegal immigrant who, instead of slipping through the cracks, walked straight up to authorities and asked for a free ride to federal custody.
The inevitable fallout.
This incident highlights a much larger problem. While this particular individual willingly turned himself in, how many others in similar situations will actually follow through with criminal activity? The already-overworked police departments in cities like Detroit don’t need additional burdens that illegal immigration brings, but that’s exactly what many are facing.
