LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) — Two years after his dismissal and lawsuit against Michigan State University, former business dean Sanjay Gupta is returning to campus leadership—this time with a settlement in hand and a new title as co-chair of the Green and White Council.
The settlement ends a legal dispute that began in February 2023 when Gupta sued MSU officials, claiming he was falsely accused of violating mandatory reporting policies. Gupta alleged that his dismissal was part of a scheme to block his path to the university presidency and bolster former interim President Teresa Woodruff’s chances for the role.

MSU President Kevin Guskiewicz announced on February 5 that Gupta will share leadership of the Green and White Council with MSU alumnus and former Bank of America executive Matt Elliott.
The council, introduced during Guskiewicz’s investiture speech in September 2024, aims to strengthen Michigan’s workforce by connecting MSU graduates with local career opportunities, according to The State News.
While court records do not detail the full settlement terms, Gupta will return to the university as an Eli Broad endowed professor, regain the title of dean emeritus, and have his legal fees reimbursed.
