WASHINGTON (Michigan News Source) – President Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has reported cutting $55 billion so far in federal expenses. The DOGE stated that $55 billion in reduction was due to fraud detection/deletion, asset sales, grant cancellations, workforce reductions and programmatic changes, among other things.

The cost-cutting is because government spending has increased dramatically. The federal government hasn’t produced a balanced budget since 2001, according to The American Presidency Project done by the University of California-Santa Barbara.

The U.S. Government Accountability Office produced a Feb. 5 report that stated the federal debt was $28.2 trillion and that the government spent $882 billion in 2024 paying interest on that debt. Those interest payments exceeded federal spending on Medicaid and national defense, according to the GAO.

The federal government budget reported $4.8 billion in receipts and $6.2 billion in expenditures in 2024.
