DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – A police sergeant working with the city of Detroit took home $306,924 in gross pay in 2024, including $114,510 in overtime he was paid.
That gross pay released by the city in a public records request. The gross pay includes all forms of compensation employees received, including small amounts such as $1,500 for uniforms and much larger payouts for shift premiums, holiday pay and unused vacation and sick time. One police officer who made $104,302 in overtime had 22 different payment categories.

There were 85 employees who made at least $65,000 in overtime or more in 2024, including 16 employees who made $100,000 or more in overtime. The highest amount one employee made in overtime in 2024 was a police sergeant who had $127,063 in overtime and that pushed his gross pay to $239,561.
Overtime is a significant part of compensation in public safety across the country. Firefighters and police officers are often the highest paid employees in a municipality due to overtime.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan earned $213,309 in 2024.
The number of full-time positions budgeted in the police department is at the highest level in 16 years.
In 2024, the city budgeted for 3,385 full-time positions in the police department, the most since 2009.
The police department’s budget has increased from $321.6 million in 2018-19 to $441.85 million in 2024-25, not adjusted for inflation. That’s a 12% increase when adjusted for inflation.
