DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Detroit’s pitching staff is on tap to be one of the MLB’s best in 2025 with Alex Cobb and new reliever John Brebbia. However, Cobb will miss the start of the 2025 MLB season due to hip surgery. Cobb signed a one-year, $15 million deal with Detroit two months ago to help the starting rotation.

Brebbia, a strong bullpen pitcher, also has a one-year contract for $2.25 million with a $4 million club option for 2026. He played for the Chicago White Sox and Atlanta Braves last season and had a 5.86 ERA with 67 strikeouts in 55.1 innings of work. His seven-year career has brought him a 3.80 ERA.

Cobb’s injury is to his hip, and he has already had two surgeries in his career. He only pitched in three games last season and went 7-7 in 2023 for San Francisco but made the All-Star team. He has a 79-76 record with a 3.84 ERA in 233 starts over 13 seasons. He joins the Detroit rotation of AL Triple Crown winner Tarik Skubal and new pitcher Jack Flaherty.

Detroit opens the 2025 season on March 27 in Los Angeles against the Dodgers.
