ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The city of Ann Arbor is promoting $100,000 in rebates on a first-come, first-basis to residents who want to buy an electric leaf blower.

The city has outlawed the gas-powered leaf blowers during certain months for now until an outright ban starts in 2028. The city has encouraged residents to report people using gas-powered leaf blowers during the seasonal ban to its police department’s Community Standards division. Fines are $100 for the first offense, $250 for subsequent violations.

The ban on gas-powered leaf blowers went into effect June 1, 2024 to Sept. 30, 2024. Through 2027, gas-powered leaf blowers are still allowed but will be banned outright on Jan. 1, 2028.

The city does allow gas-powered leaf blowers to be used at any time if it is “in an emergency to protect health, safety, or property.”

Discounts and rebates for electric lawn care equipment starts March through and runs through May 31. The city has set up a contractor to work with residents on the program.
