LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Police are sworn to “protect and serve” their communities. However, some law enforcement officials in Michigan have not received that memo as some push back against the Trump administration’s “shock and awe” deportation campaign.
It’s been reported that newly elected Washtenaw County Sheriff and progressive advocate Alyshia Dyer will not assist U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials with the deportation of criminals in the country illegally.

“We’re not getting involved,” Dyer said to several outlets. Michigan News Source reached out to Dyer over the weekend to see if she would be willing to go to jail for her stance but did not respond by press time. Border Czar Tom Homan and U.S. Department of Homeland Security Advisor Stephen Miller have repeatedly said they will arrest officials interfering with deportations.
Sheriff Dyer isn’t the only official taking this stance. Grand Rapid Police Chief Eric Winstrom spoke during a Grand Rapids City Commission retreat last Thursday. He said officers would not arrest or detain people solely on immigration violations.
“The Grand Rapids Police Department is not in the business of immigration enforcement,” Winstrom said. “We want people to feel comfortable calling 911, especially victims coming forward, without the fear of information regarding their documentation status being provided to immigration authorities,” he said.

Meanwhile, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, a longtime Democrat who is trying to separate himself from the party by running for governor as an independent, said the city will continue to work with ICE.
