LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – State Senator Mallory McMorrow (D-Royal Oak) wants to make sure people in her voting district, including illegal aliens, know that the Detroit ID card program is back.

In a Jan. 11 email to constituents, Sen. McMorrow encouraged people “regardless of immigration status” to apply for the card.

“The Detroit ID is an identification card that benefits ALL Detroiters,” McMorrow wrote. “Regardless of your immigration status, whether you are experiencing homelessness or are a returning citizen, the Detroit ID is yours.”

McMorrow also posted the information on Facebook.

The city paused the program in 2022 due to concerns that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials might be able to access the information to deport illegal aliens. They city switched to a vendor that did not electronically store information. Instead, cards are only printed now. Officials restarted the Detroit ID program last September.

Chief Public Health Officer Denise Fair Razo called the program a “vital service” and said the IDs “empower residents to access city services and participate in our local economy,” she said.

According to the city’s website, the Detroit ID cannot be used for voting.

McMorrow’s reminder comes just a few days before President-elect Donald Trump takes office. In previous reporting by Michigan News Source, several Michigan “welcoming cities,” like Detroit and Ann Arbor, implemented anti-profiling policies so police cannot inquire about a person’s immigration status unless they are suspected of a crime.
