SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The new year is a time for new opportunities – and new words. As the calendar flipped to 2025, Lake Superior State University (LSSU) revealed its annual list of words and phrases that should be put in the rearview mirror.
The Upper Peninsula university has published its traditional list of “banished words” every year since 1976. The list includes words that are misused, overused, or unnecessary.

“Words matter!” said Lake Superior State President, Dr. David Travis. “Old habits can be hard to break and we’re happy to serve as a resource for the court of public opinion on what should continue to be part of the English language and what needs to be put to rest,” he said.
So what made the most recent list? Below shows the words that LSSU says have “overstayed their welcome” and should stay in 2024:
1. Cringe
2. Game Changer
3. Era
4. Dropped
5. IYKYK (If You Know, You Know)
6. Sorry Not Sorry
7. Skibidi
8. 100%
9. Utilize
10. Period
