LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) — Michigan’s Senator-elect Elissa Slotkin is heading to Washington with a prominent new role: a seat on the Senate Armed Services Committee.
The Holly Democrat and former Pentagon official will help shape U.S. military policy, stepping into a position vacated by retiring Sen. Joe Manchin (D-West Virginia).

Slotkin joins Michigan’s senior senator, Gary Peters (D-Bloomfield Township), on the Armed Services panel. In addition to Armed Services, Slotkin has also landed assignments on the Agriculture, Homeland Security, and Veterans’ Affairs committees, according to The Detroit News.
“These committee assignments will enable me to fulfill the ironclad commitments I made to Michigan during the campaign,” Slotkin said in a statement.
Her move to the Senate comes as Michigan adjusts to shifts in its congressional delegation. Slotkin replaces retiring Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Lansing), who chaired the Agriculture Committee.
Marking the start of her term as Michigan’s junior senator, Slotkin is set to be sworn in on January 3.
