WASHINGTON (Michigan News Source) – Red Dye No. 3 will soon be out of American food and pills.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is revoking the authorization for the use of FD&C Red No. 3 in food and ingested drugs in response to a 2022 color additive petition. The move comes 35 years after the ban of the same dye in cosmetics because of potential cancer links.

Countries in Europe have banned the dye, along with Australia and Japan.

The bright red dye is found in numerous items including candies, snack cakes, strawberry-flavored items, maraschino cherries, cough syrups, and more.

Food manufacturers have two years to reformulate their products to comply with the new regulations and remove the Red Dye No. 3. Producers of drugs and cough syrups have three years.

The FDA’s announcement comes just a few days before President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration. He has nominated Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. as the head of the Department of Health and Human Services. Among other things, Kennedy planned to fight for removal of dyes in American food.
