LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) Thousands of Michigan drivers hoping to stand out on the road with personalized license plates have instead been told to pump the brakes. The Michigan Department of State has rejected more than 25,000 plate requests for violating state guidelines, a number that grows every year, according to Bridge Michigan.

The continuously updated list features everything from “1FRT3D” to “ADULTRY,” with plenty of tongue-in-cheek entries like “0HCHIT” and “0N1YFNZ.” Other rejections include plates like “BEER30,” “0P00P,” and “1H0TB0X.”

Submissions referencing profanity, drugs, or sexual content—like “1BADMF” and “0METH”—are among the most common reasons for rejection, according to public records obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request.

A team of 25 volunteers reviews applications, voting on whether to approve or deny each plate. Plates can also be rejected if they combine with an organization’s logo to create an inappropriate phrase.

Rejected applicants receive a letter explaining the decision, with the option to appeal, though the odds of overturning a rejection are slim. In fact, roughly 600 plates a year are denied specifically due to inappropriate combinations with logos.

Michigan drivers still determined to personalize their plates can use the Secretary of State’s online tool to check availability and preview designs. However, those hoping for plates like “2HOT4U” or “0FUXGVN” will have to settle for something less edgy.
