LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan Democrats in Lansing appear stuck in the past. They do not seem to understand that tens of thousands of restaurant workers could lose their jobs in a few weeks if legislation isn’t passed saving the tip credit and amending sick hours.

The Democratic-led Michigan Senate adopted Senate Resolution 6 on Thursday. It is “a resolution condemning the attack on the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021, including the assault on the courageous members of the Capitol Police, and denouncing the use of presidential pardon power to absolve those who participated in the dangerous and anti-democratic riots.”

Michigan voters sent a loud and clear message on Nov. 5, but Democrats in Lansing still have not received the memo. Many people don’t care about Jan. 6, but they do care about their livelihood.

Last week, the Michigan House passed two bills that would save the tip credit for the state’s restaurant and bar workers as well as adjust the sick time requirements for businesses. Michigan’s hospitality industry has repeatedly plead with Michigan lawmakers to find a solution to the Michigan Supreme Court’ ruling that changed minimum wage standards.

If lawmakers do not pass a solution by Feb. 21, the new changes go into effect.

Dems dragged their lame duck feet.

The House moved with efficiency after December’s fiasco with the Democratic lame duck session. Republicans said then House Speaker Joe Tate (D-Detroit) ignored a promise to take up the tip credit before the new year. House Republicans walked out of the session, but Democrats held a majority so they did not need their colleagues across the aisle to move legislation forward.

Several days later, House Rep. Karen Whitsett (D-Detroit) refused to come to session after the chamber refused to take up bills that affected her constituents.

“Fix the damn roads.”

Michigan is also facing a road crisis as several road funding measures expire. House Republicans are working to shore up alternate methods to fix Michigan’s roads, but Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has simply proposed more fees and tax hikes.

More money does not automatically mean more results. A national report card released this week showed that despite record pandemic funding, Michigan’s fourth graders scored the worst in reading since 1992.

In addition, 8th grade math results came in at the lowest since 1992, with Grade 8 Math reading results the lowest in three years.

In 2021, Whitmer vetoed reading scholarships because she likened them to vouchers.
