DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Thoughts of another NFC Championship game appearance ended on Saturday night for Detroit as the Washington Commanders shocked the Lions 45-31. Washington scored 28 points in the second quarter for a 31-21 halftime lead.
Detroit had over 500 yards of offense, passing for 320 yards, but had four interceptions, allowed two sacks, and one fumble. Goff went 23-of-40 for 313 yards with only one touchdown and three interceptions. Jahmyr Gibbs rushed for 105 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns. Jameson Williams had one carry for 61 yards and a touchdown. Aman-Ra St. Brown finished with 137 yards on eight receptions.

Starting strong, Detroit took an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Taking three minutes off the clock, they drove 71 yards as Gibbs finished the drive on a one-yard run at 7:36. Washington responded with a field goal at 3:50 as Detroit held a four-point lead after the first quarter, 7-3.
A Detroit fumble in the second quarter gave Washington life as they took over at their 22-yard line. It took five minutes and 11 plays for Washington to score as Brian Robinson rushed in from two yards for the 10-7 lead. Detroit countered, going 70 yards as Goff found a diving Sam LaPorta in the endzone to retake the lead, 14-10, at 7:44. It only took Washington three plays to go in front for good as Terry McLaurin had a 58-yard touchdown reception, making it 17-14. Quan Martin followed on a pick-6 at 5:25 as the Commanders had a strong 10-point lead, 24-14. Detroit didn’t shy away from the challenge as Jameson Williams had a 61-yard rush with just over four minutes to play, cutting the lead to three, 24-21. Once again, Washington’s offense didn’t miss a beat with a seven-play, 70-yard drive capped off by a Zach Ertz five-yard touchdown pass just before the half, 31-21.
Both offenses slowed down in the third quarter as Gibbs pulled Detroit within three, 31-28, at 6:57. He rushed in from eight yards out as Detroit drove 91 yards. Washington continued to control the game, taking eight minutes off the clock, ending on a Robinson one-yard touchdown run and 10-point lead, 38-28. Six minutes later, Washington finished off their scoring on a Jeremy McNichols one-yard run going up. 45-28. Detroit’s last points of the game ended with a 28-yard Jake Bates field goal as they trailed 45-31. One final drive with just over a minute to go for Detroit ended with an interception in the endzone as Detroit’s season ended.
Detroit ends their season with 15 wins and several franchise records.
