LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Officials with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) pressed pause on future land leases for solar energy on state land. The move comes after residents expressed anger over 420 acres of state forest near Gaylord being cleared to put up solar panels.
During a meeting earlier this week, forestry advisors received word that the DNR extended the public notice period for the Gaylord site and halted consideration of future sites for the time being.

Public response also triggered the DNR to create an information portal on the DNR’s website which will be active soon.
Despite their intentions, the DNR may not have long to pause. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and the Democratic majority implemented stringent “green energy” initiatives in 2023 which forces utilities into clean energy sources by 2040, and make the state carbon neutral by 2050.
