HOUGHTON LAKE, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – If your New Year’s resolution is to get out more or to embrace adventure, Michigan’s got you covered – whether you’re a winter warrior or someone who prefers their adventures hot and caffeinated. Here are some ideas on how to start 2024 off with a bang – or maybe just a warm cinnamon roll…
Freeze your worries away.
While you might have missed jumpstarting your year with a polar bear plunge, there are plenty of cold winter things left to do now that snow looks like it’ll be making a comeback in Michigan. Ideas include snow skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, fat tire biking, winter hiking and even dogsledding. And if you’d rather stay on top of the ice, you can try your hand at ice fishing.

January 18th and 19th and the 25th are the dates for the yearly Tip Up Town Festival in Houghton Lake this year. Besides ice fishing, events include a parade, amusement rides and games, a wood carving demo, pony rides, a petting zoo, food trucks and more.
Then there’s the “World of Winter” in Grand Rapids from January 10th through March 2nd. It’s a free outdoor celebration in downtown Grand Raids celebrating winter through art, events and activities for all ages. They call their event the “largest winter festival in the U.S.”
Keep It cozy.
Not a fan of braving the polar vortex? Trade the chill for comfort by diving into a stack of pancakes the size of your head at a local diner or curling up at a cozy coffee shop. For ultimate relaxation, settle into a resort lounge by a crackling fireplace with a good book, leaving the layered-up adventurers to their frosty fun. Other warm escapes include exploring a museum, browsing a local library, hunting treasures at nearby thrift stores, or indulging at your favorite pizza spot or bakery. Chili cook-offs also seem to pop up in different places in January and February.
And, of course, there’s nothing better than snuggling up with your furry companions, whether they purr or wag their tails!
Safety first.
Winter outings are magical – until you realize you’re dressed more for fashion than survival. Layer up, bring snacks, and keep your phone charged in case you wander off into the tundra (or just a particularly snowy parking lot). And don’t forget the ice scraper.
So whether you’re plunging into Lake Michigan or just plunging into a plate of fries at your favorite diner, Michigan is here to make your New Year’s Day unforgettable. And hey, if you’re still feeling sluggish from last night’s champagne toast, that brisk Lake Michigan breeze will perk you up faster than any coffee shop ever could.
