GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Grand Rapids Mayor David LaGrand has requested that he be able to give up his city-owned vehicle that is assigned to him and in place just be given $700-a-month to cover all of his transportation expenses.

Under the proposed plan that the city commission will review Tuesday, the $700-a-month would cover “all vehicle-related costs,” including fuel, insurance and maintenance. The mayor would also not be eligible for mileage reimbursement.

“The allowance represents a significant reduction in City costs compared to the fully loaded expenses of a City-owned vehicle,” City Manager Mark Washington stated in a memo. Washington didn’t say how much of a savings it would be.

The mayor can select a personal vehicle of his own choice. LaGrand was elected mayor in November.
