LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer continues her determined crusade to make sure no Michigander goes without access to condoms, oral contraceptives, and emergency contraception – all while Michigan grapples with crumbling roads, a high unemployment rate, inflation and faltering educational outcomes.

Instead of focusing on more pressing issues, Gov. Whitmer has the Michigan Dept. of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) touting its “Take Control Of Your Birth Control Program” where 300 locations across the state continue to offer free contraception supplies with no age or gender restrictions.

To date, the program has shipped out 34,300 doses of emergency contraceptive, 34,300 doses of oral birth control pills and 171,500 condoms. Currently, the MDHHS is preparing to provide resources for more than 25,000 additional individuals.

Whitmer celebrates the initiative as a major win for Michigan.

In a press release that reads like a victory lap, Gov. Whitmer proudly announced the success of the initiative. “Every Michigander deserves access to affordable birth control, contraception and other reproductive health care,” said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. “With Take Control of Your Birth Control up and running at 300 locations statewide, we deliver these critical resources to tens of thousands of Michiganders, for free. Here in Michigan, we believe that you deserve the freedom to make your own decision about your own body, and we will keep fighting like hell to expand access to reproductive health care and lowering costs for Michiganders.”

Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, chief medical executive, says about the program, “We are proud to help Michigan families access resources that allow them to make their own decisions about their health and future. This campaign reflects the state’s ongoing commitment to ensuring equitable access to reproductive health services. We encourage Michigan residents to make a plan for their family planning needs. The free resources made available through this program are a good way to get started.”

MDHHS Ensures statewide access to free birth control and STI prevention supplies.

To implement the program, the MDHHS distributes resources to participating counties, which collaborate with community partners, local health departments, MDHHS offices, and federally qualified health centers.

Resources are available free on a first-come-first-served basis without users having to provide any insurance information.

Latex doesn’t fix potholes.

While Whitmer is busy rolling out her “condom for all” initiative, Michigan residents are still rolling over potholes that can swallow a sedan. It’s hard to imagine that free birth control is the “cure” or solution to what ails Michigan that voters were asking for when they went to the polls two years ago.
