DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – The Detroit Public Schools Community District came in as the worst-performing school district in the country in 2024 version of “The Nation’s Report Card.”

The school district finished 26th in 4th and 8th grade reading and math rankings.

The National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) conducts testing over the nation’s students every two years. In addition, the NAEP releases data from the country’s largest school districts in which Detroit participates along with Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Miami and other large school districts.
The district has finished as the worst-performing school district every time since it first participated in 2009.
Detroit’s public school district did show some improvement from its 2022 performance.
The district is assessed with scores on a range from 0-to-500.
Fourth grade results.
It’s Grade 4 Math score of 200 was six points higher than 2022. The district peaked with a reading score of 205 in 2019.
Detroit’s Grade 4 Reading score of 174 dropped two points from 2022. That 2024 reading score was the lowest ever posted by the district since it joined The Nation’s Report Card in 2009.
Eighth grade results.
Detroit’s Grade 8 Math score of 237 was one point worse than 2022 and the lowest score the district has ever posted. Also, Detroit’s Grade 8 Reading score of 229 was two points higher than 2022. Detroit’s Grade 8 Reading score peaked at 239 in 2013.

“Average scores for Michigan’s largest school district, Detroit Public Schools Community District, increased marginally from 2022 to 2024 for fourth-grade math and eighth-grade reading, but no score changes from 2022 to 2024 were statistically significant,” the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) stated in a press release. “Detroit is the only Michigan school district for which NAEP releases district test results.”
