DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – The city of Detroit reported 7,853 stolen cars in 2024, an average of about 22 a day.
That’s according to a city data base updated through 2024. It marked the second year in a row the city reported having fewer cars stolen. There were 8,708 cars stolen in 2023 and 9,143 cars stolen in 2022.

Detroit’s stolen car numbers are still higher than pre-pandemic times. In 2019, the city reported 6,497 stolen cars.
In December 2022, the city changed its policies so people who had their cars stolen in the city and had it recovered would not have to pay “excessive” impound and storage fees to the private towing companies. The city negotiated new contracts with its private towing companies so that recovered stolen vehicles are returned to the city of Detroit lot and no charges are incurred to retrieve a stolen vehicle. If a stolen vehicle is returned to a private lot, the city pays the costs of the tow.
Last week, the Michigan Attorney General’s office announced it had arrested four Detroit residents who it claimed were part of a criminal ring that targeted new vehicle storage lots, car dealerships, parking lots and individual residents in Southeast Michigan. The AG’s office claimed that criminal organization was responsible for hundreds of vehicles in the area.
