DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – The cost of keeping the city of Detroit safe is getting higher and higher.
The city spent $657.6 million on police and fire in 2024, an increase of $56.5 million from the previous year or 9%.

The city spent $485.7 million on “public protection” in 2019, which is a 10% increase when adjusting for inflation.
That’s according to data provided by the city to the state of Michigan’s Department of Treasury last week.
The police and fire departments have added employees since 2019, the last year before the pandemic hit, despite a drop in the city’s population.
The police department grew from 3,094 full-time jobs in 2019 to 3,385 in 2024 and the fire department had 1,178 full-time employees in 2019 and 1,212 in 2024.
The city estimates its population has dropped from 670,442 in 2019 to 633,221 in 2023.
