DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Hundreds of Amtrak riders were notified about an hour before departure, that the last train from Detroit to Chicago had been cancelled due to severe cold on Tuesday and that the transit agency was not providing any alternate transportation.
An Amtrak employee said the train’s toilets had frozen as temperatures were in the single digits. Amtrak says when it cancels a train, it provides alternate transportation such as a chartered bus. But in this instance, the company said it could not find bus drivers.

Amtrak reported 20 trains at stations in seven states were canceled due to the cold weather. Amtrak stated it provided alternate transportation to 15 of those canceled trains.
Riders were alerted at 5:10 p.m. that the train that departed at 6:29 a.m. was delayed due to a “disruption.”
At 5:24 p.m., Amtrak announced the train was cancelled and no alternate transportation would be provided.
“We apologize for the inconvenience,” Amtrak stated.
Amtrak has acknowledged the issue with freezing toilets in the cold weather. The company said it is constantly working to address the problem.
