WASHINGTON (Michigan News Source) – The 119th Congress will be sworn in at the U.S. Capitol on Friday. That means a Republican majority in both the U.S. House and Senate for the first time in five years. It also sets up President-elect Donald Trump and his “America first” agenda as he prepares to enter the White House on Jan. 20.

For Michigan, that means several new faces in the House and Senate.

The U.S. House.

Returning Michigan Congressional representatives include Reps. Jack Bergman (R), John Moolenaar (R), Hillary Scholten (D), Bill Huizenga (R), Tim Walberg (R), Debbie Dingell (D), Lisa McClain (R), John James (R), Haley Stevens (D), Rashida Tlaib (D), and Shri Thanedar (D).

The newcomers are Tom Barrett, a Republican who replaced Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin, and Kristen McDonald Rivet (D) who will step into the shoes of retiring Democratic Rep. Dan Kildee. Barrett will represent Michigan’s 7th District which makes up much of the greater Lansing area. His win marked a key victory for Republicans and the Trump administration. McDonald Rivet will represent the 8th Congressional District, which includes Flint.

The House will spend much of Friday electing a new speaker.

The U.S. Senate.

Former Rep. Elissa Slotkin will be serving in the other Congressional chamber after winning the seat of retiring U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow. Slotkin joins current Senator Gary Peters. Slotkin, along with Peters, is now a member of the Senate Committee on Armed Services. She will serve on three other committees as well.
