ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – What a great two games of Big Ten hockey on Friday and Saturday which showed off one of the sport’s best rivalries. On Friday night in Ann Arbor, no. 10 Michigan upset no. 1 MSU, 3-2 in overtime. But the Spartans fought back and took the second meeting on Saturday night, 4-1, in East Lansing.
Michigan’s T.J. Hughes found Garrett Schifsky in the slot for the quick one-time for the win just over a minute into overtime. The shot went past MSU’s Trey Augustine, who had 29 saves in the game. UM’s Logan Stein had 35 saves on 37 shots.

MSU Scored first at 2:04 in the first period on a shot by Karsen Dorwart. Michigan countered in the second period on a power play when Will Horcoff found the net on assists from Evan Werner and Ethan Edwards. Joey Larson gave MSU the 2-1 lead in the third period at 8:35, but Hughes tied the game at 14:25 to send the game to overtime.
The two teams met again on Saturday night, but MSU powered over UM 4-1 with two power-play goals. Charlie Stramel scored two of the four goals with one assist. Matt Basgall netted MSU’s first goal at 5:36, and then Stramel added the second goal at 18:03. MSU added two more goals in the second period for the 4-0 lead. Shane Vansaghi scored the third goal at 5:43, and Stramel finished the scoring at 8:12. UM’s Hughs found the net at 18:50 for their lone goal.
MSU is now 10-2-2 in the Big Ten, while Michigan falls to 8-6-0.
