ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The University of Michigan Health is seeing the financial benefits of adding the Sparrow Health System to its fold as its patient-care revenues hit a record $8 billion in 2024.

Sparrow Health System joined University of Michigan Health in April 2023, now called University of Michigan Health-Sparrow.

The University of Michigan’s patient-care revenues have increased from $4.4 billion in 2018 to $8 billion in 2024, according to the university’s 2024 audited report

That $8 billion in patient care revenues offset $7.8 billion in patient-care expenses in 2024.

The University of Michigan’s health care umbrella includes University of Michigan Health, UM Health and Michigan Health Corporation.

Sparrow Health System is under UM Health and that division’s patient-care revenues increased from $522 million in 2022 to $2 billion in 2024.

“In the last five years, Michigan Medicine has seen significant growth in patient volume, influenced both by demand at our southeast Michigan facilities and in our regional network that includes University of Michigan Health-Sparrow and University of Michigan Health-West,” said Mary Masson, senior director of public relations at the University of Michigan, in an email to Michigan News Source.

Patient care revenues are principally generated by the University of Michigan’s hospitals and ambulance services. The University of Michigan’s health care system operated more than 2,080 licensed beds in 2024.
