DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Adding former New York Yankee second baseman to the 2025 team, Detroit signed Gleyber Torres to a one-year, $15 million deal. With this, strong rumors exist that the Tigers are pursuing Houston’s Alex Bregman.
Detroit’s President of Baseball Operations Scott Harris says, “We are going to keep working. You guys know me, I can’t really sit on my hands, so I’m going to try to continue to help this group get better. But I really like where we’re at right now.”

Torres is a seven-year MLB veteran, all with the Yankees, and a two-time All-Star. He has produced 138 home runs and 441 RBI. Last year, he hit .257 with 15 home runs and 63 RBI. His best production came in 2019 with 38 home runs and 90 RBI, but he had back-to-back 20+ home run seasons in 2022 (24) and 2023 (25).
Harris says on Torres, “We saw him tap a little bit more into his offensive upside in the second half and the postseason. We think there’s more in there. Gleyber does, too.”
Rumors are now that the Tigers are pursuing Bregman from Houston. According to Detroit Free Press’ Evan Petzhold, Detroit is “all-in” on Bregman. His sources said that both sides are engaged in conversation, but there is a gap in value as Bregman’s market narrows.
Detroit made the MLB postseason for the first time since 2014 and aims to do more in 2025.
