GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Michigan News Source)The Rapid, the city bus transportation system for Grand Rapids, is proposing its first fare cap adjustments since 2018. They are currently seeking public feedback on these changes, which could impact both daily and monthly pass holders starting in April 2025.

Under the proposal, the daily fare cap would rise from $3.50 to $5.25, and the adult monthly fare cap would increase from $47.00 to $60.00. The base fare of $1.75 per ride remains unchanged, and there will be no changes to fares for youth riders, reduced-fare programs, services under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), or paratransit options.

“The proposed adjustments are consistent with fare structures implemented by transit agencies of similar size and scale across the country,” The Rapid said in a statement. “Our current monthly cap was found to be one of the lowest within the array of peer groups with similar base fares.”

The Rapid also stated that a Federal Title VI analysis determined the changes would not disproportionately impact low-income or minority riders, as the base fare remains steady.

Riders can share feedback until Jan. 20 through online forms, in-person submissions at Rapid Central Station, or at public hearings scheduled for:

  • Wednesday, Jan. 15: 6:30 a.m. – 8:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, Jan. 16: 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

The Rapid’s Board of Directors will review all feedback before voting on Jan. 29. If approved, the new fare caps will take effect on April 1, 2025.
