TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Nationwide statistics indicate that incidents of domestic violence surge over the holidays. In Michigan, service centers and advocacy groups are working to make sure women and children are safe year round.
According to the 18th Annual Domestic Violence Counts Report, Michigan served 2,919 adult and child victims of domestic violence. Roughly 2,000 found refuge in various emergency shelters, transitional housing, hotels, motels, and other housing. In addition, 900 more victims received transportation, housing advocacy, legal support, and therapy.

In Traverse City, workers at the Women’s Resource Center says they receive up to 5,000 calls a year from women needing help out of a domestic violence situation. The organization says abuse isn’t just physical. It can also be mental, emotional, economic, and sexual. In addition, the Safe Center in Owosso says 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men
will experience domestic violence at some point in their lives.
The State of Michigan has many resources available for domestic abuse victims. There are laws that protect victims of abuse. “Domestic violence is not a family matter,” the Michigan State Police say. “It is a crime.”
