DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – A Macomb County resident recently lost hundreds of dollars in a Facebook Marketplace scam after he tried to purchase tickets for the Detroit Lions game.

After Tim Paletti of New Baltimore paid for the tickets, the tickets were not delivered and the seller blocked him on social media. Paletti filed a police report in hopes of getting his money back.

In the meantime, Facebook says these tips will help you buy and sell online safely:

  • Trust your gut. If it’s “too good to be true” it probably is. Scammers underprice items to lure buyers.
  • Do not send deposits for high value items without confirming that they’re real first. Confirm the existence of ownership in a video chat before money is exchanged.
  • Verify the tracking numbers on the shipping company’s website; double check that the delivery address and shipping information is correct.
  • Review the seller’s profile and their ratings to learn more about the seller.
  • Learn how long the seller’s page has been active.
  • Eligible purchases made with checkout on Facebook are covered by Purchase Protection.
  • When buying in person inspect the items closely. Then complete the transaction.
