LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Michigan Supreme Court has denied the appeal for a former Grand Rapids Police officer charged with murder.

Christopher Schurr is charged with second-degree murder after shooting Patrick Lyoya following a traffic stop in April of 2022. Schurr said he pulled Lyoya over because his vehicle and plates did not match. Body cam footage show Lyoya resisting arrest and going for Schurr’s taser. Schurr has repeatedly said he feared for his life.

Toxicology reports later revealed Lyoya’s blood alcohol level at three times the legal limit.

Schurr’s legal team asked the high court to grant the application for appeal, vacate the district court’s bindover, and dismiss the murder charge against Schurr. They argued deadly force was justified.

Kent County Prosecutor Christopher Becker said he’s ready to move the case forward.
