DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Trailing 28-21 halfway through the third quarter, Detroit reeled off 19 unanswered points as they finished strong, 40-34, over San Francisco. Two Jake Bates field goals, an Amon-Ra St. Brown touchdown pass, and Jahmyr Gibbs 30-yard electric run with 2:58 to go in the game ended the 49ers hope of an upset. San Francisco scored with 43 seconds left to pull within six, but the onside kick went out of bounds as Detroit ended the game.

With 14 wins, which continues to be a franchise record, Detroit now hosts Minnesota in the season finale for the NFC North Championship and the top seed in the playoffs. The win in San Francisco was the first for Detroit since 1975, breaking a 14-game losing streak.

After the game, head coach Dan Campbell said in the locker room, “I have an unbelievable amount of respect for you guys. I know what this was and there were all these arguments about what this game really means because of next week so I respect the hell out of you guys.”

Jared Goff threw for 303 yards and three touchdowns, going 26-of-34 as Jameson Williams, Sam LaPorta, and St. Brown all had receiving touchdowns. Gibbs finished with one rushing touchdown and 117 yards on 18 carries, while the offense had 439 yards.

“Every game is meaningful. We just had to come out here and play Detroit football and get a win. We weren’t planning on resting, and I’m pretty sure coach is going to have us ready for Sunday night,” said Williams on the ESPN post-game show.

Williams accounted for the first two touchdowns of the game with a three-yard rush for the first touchdown in the first quarter and a 42-yard shuffle pass in the second quarter. He finished with 77 yards receiving on five catches.

On the ESPN post-game show, Brown says, “We are a resilient group. We are 8-0 on the road and I don’t think that has ever been done in franchise history. Playing at home is amazing but to go on the road and win games on the road shows how special of a group we have here and we have to keep going. We have a big one next week, at home, with the best fans in the world.”

Kerby Joseph made San Francisco’s Brock Purdy’s night hard with two second-half interceptions and six total tackles. Jack Campbell led the team with nine tackles, and Brian Branch and Myles Adam had sacks.
