LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Infighting among Michigan’s Democratic majority lead to an adjournment on Thursday afternoon with no work getting done.

At the center of Thursday’s shenanigans is House Speaker Joe Tate (D-Detroit). After issuing a Call of the House on Thursday afternoon, the House adjourned an hour later. It will reconvene on Dec. 31, 2024 at 1:30 p.m. That marks the remaining hours of Democratic majority before the Republicans take over on Jan.1.

It’s been a week of playing politics on both sides of the aisle. Republicans walked out of session last Friday after they said Speaker Tate reneged on an offer to address the changes in minimum wage that will impact tipped workers and the restaurant industry. Democrats did not need Republicans to pass any legislation, but complained about their colleagues anyway.

Michigan Democrats also appear to be losing hold of their own party. Rep. Karen Whitsett (D-Detroit) stayed home on Wednesday because Democrats would not take up her water bill. When she returned to work on Thursday under the assumption that the bill would be taken up, she received word that her bill would likely be not get taken up at all, or would be put at the end of the agenda.

Whitsett was livid and expressed her feelings to the media. “[Speaker Joe Tate] did not negotiate in good faith,” she said. Whitsett explained that the lack of quorum because of her attendance is due to Tate going back on his word. “This was not me,” she said.

The Senate is scheduled to meet on Monday, Dec. 23.
