DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Detroit Public School Community District’s per pupil funding of $28,911 was double the state average of $14,475 in 2022-23, the latest year data is available from the state’s Bulletin 1014 report.

With an abundance of money, the Detroit district has gone on a hiring crusade since the pandemic, adding top-level administrators at a much higher rate than teachers.
The number of full-time jobs for “officials, administrators, managers” has increased within the district from 163 in 2017 to 266 in 2024, a 63% boost, according to data from the school district. Also, the number of classroom teachers increased from 2,493 in 2017 to 2,888, a 16% increase. Overall, the number of full-time jobs in the district has jumped 18%.
Enrollment within the district from 2017 to 2024 has increased by 6% although the district’s enrollment has declined in each of the last four years. The district had 48,159 students as of 2024.
The cost of educating a student has increased from $13,895 in 2017 to $23,351 in 2024, a 31% increase when adjusted for inflation.
