The city’s Law Director JoAnne Gurley said in a memo to the city council that the Pontiac School District contacted the city about creating such an ordinance. Gurley stated that Darryl Segars, the school district’s attorney, had worked with the city to create the ordinance that would prevent anyone 21 years or younger from using or possessing vaping products.

“The penalties for disobeying the ordinance include a combination of fines and community service and escalates based on the number of violations that have previously occurred,” the city memo stated. The fines would be $50.

A draft of the ordinance states that anyone 21-year-old or younger may not purchase or possess a vapor product or use a vapor product on “school grounds, athletic facilities, school-related events, or generally in the City of Pontiac.”
