EAST LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Momentum didn’t go the way Michigan State wanted it after they scored on the opening drive as they dropped their final Big Ten game of the year, 41-14, to Rutgers. MSU is 5-7 and misses being bowl eligible but will now wait and see if there are any spots for five-win teams.

Nate Carte gave MSU the 7-0 lead on a 26-yard touchdown run with 12:26 in the first quarter. Rutgers followed with 34 unanswered points with 23 in the first half. MSU’s final score came in the fourth quarter with 7:21 to play when Aidan Chiles hit Jack Velling from five-yards out. Rutgers had another touchdown before the game ended at 1:57 for the 41-14 score.

Chiles threw for 150 yards with one touchdown as Kay’Ron Lynch-Adams had nine rushes for 69 yards. Velling finished with 77 yards receiving on five catches.

“We didn’t play well enough to earn a win or the chance to continue to play on. It is going to take work to get this to a better place. We’ve had definite ups and downs. We got to get it going. We got to get better; that starts with the coaches,” said MSU head coach Jonathan Smith.
