LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michiganders who plan to travel for Thanksgiving won’t have much elbow-room on the roads. However, they will see record levels of fellow drivers.
AAA reports nearly 2.6 million Michigan residents will travel at least 50 miles for the holiday. That includes 2.3 million drivers and 217,000 who will board planes. Another 74,000 will travel by bus, cruise ship, or train.

Those numbers mark an all-time high for Thanksgiving travel with 65,000 more travelers than in 2023.
Debbie Haas, Vice President of Travel for AAA, issued this travel advice for anyone hopping in a car or boarding a plane: “With more people taking to the roads, skies, rails, and sea, travelers should expect congested roads and longer lines at transportation terminals.”
Depending on the type of travel, AAA encourages travelers to develop a plan and consider travel insurance. Haas said travel insurance “provides compensation for flight cancellations, delays, and lost luggage.”
AAA said the Thanksgiving holiday travel period stretches from Tuesday, Nov. 26 to Monday, Dec. 2. Tuesday, Nov. 26, and Wednesday, Nov. 27 will be the busiest travel day for drivers. Typically on Thanksgiving day, the roadways are clear.
Nationwide, 79.9 million are projected to travel over the Thanksgiving weekend. That’s 1.7 million more than the previous record set last year.
