FLINT, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A teacher is no longer employed with Flint Community Schools after a parent expressed concern that the teacher taught a Ouija board lesson in class.

At the Nov. 20 school board meeting, the parent addressed the board about the incident that happened in her child’s second grade classroom at Freeman Elementary School. Ouija boards are associated with the occult but they are now sold in the board game section of some toy stores.

The parent, who identified herself as Billie DeVille Mitchell at the meeting, followed up on her concerns with the board. She speaks at the 19:00 mark.

“I came tonight wanting to know what measures will be taken to address the issue and see what protocol is used to hire teachers,” she said.

Superintendent Kevelin Jones addressed the matter. “We do apologize that your child had to experience something like that,” he said. “That is not something that is condoned by this board of education or the leadership of this district.” Jones continued by saying, “We have taken measures to ensure this person is not in our district any longer.”

Jones also said that the district does hire teachers through a third party firm or from substitutes already in the system. Oftentimes, teachers are hired from within the district.

DeVille Mitchell told Michigan News Source, “The video of the Ouija board was shown to students; the teaching of Ouija board was given.” She continued, “The teacher promised to bring in the Ouija board the following day, which is when I addressed my concern with the teacher.”

“This situation has been handled,” Jones said. “Anytime that happens to any one of you please make sure that you reach out to the district and we will handle that situation.”
